Wouter van Oortmerssen (aka Aardappel, Aard) is arguably a person of great importance to the Doom community. Aardappel has been influential in many projects, but is best known for being one of the original founders of the Freedoom project, his Doom "editor" WadC, and the novel entry which he submitted to the 10 Sectors contest.

Oortmerssen produced a number of items of interest peripheral to the Doom community: an experimental computer game Cube and its sequel Cube 2, the gameplay of which are considerably closer to Doom in terms of pace than most of the official successors; a number of modifications to the Quake engine, such as fisheye and panoramic lens effects.
