UV Tyson is a Compet-N speedrunning category and a Doom Honorific Title. The objective is to finish the level as quickly as possible in Ultra-Violence, killing every monster at least once, except lost souls, with the following restrictions: no weapons other than the fist, berserk fist, chainsaw, and pistol may be used. Picking up other weapons is permitted, but they may not be fired.
In levels with Type 11 Damaging floors, players are not required to kill the enemies inside the final room (since it is almost impossible to kill said enemies normally, much less during a Tyson run).
There exist collections of demos recorded with additional restrictions (on levels where they are possible), such as not becoming invulnerable, playing with fast monsters (also called "Grandmaster" or "GM Tyson" style), using only the fist and berserk fist, or using only the chainsaw. These distinctions are not recognized by Compet-N.
Similarly, UV Tyson on Heretic could restrict the player to using only the Staff, Gauntlets of the Necromancer, and Elven Wand, since these are close analogues of the Doom weapons.
Potentially, in Doom 3, the player could use the Fist, Berserk Fist, Flashlight, Chainsaw, and Pistol. Note that the player is liable to run out of pistol bullets, since the ammunition isn't shared with any other weapon and is scarce later in the game. This also means that the popular "Pistol Only" run for Doom (2016) won't work in Doom 3.
In Doom (2016), there is an equivalent "Pistol Only" run where the player is restricted to the Pistol, usually on Nightmare or Ultra Nightmare difficulty. Some runs allow Glory Kills, powerups including Berserk Fist, Equipment such as Frag Grenades, and/or environmental hazards such as explosive barrels (to the disapproval of purists), but no other weapons can be used. In Doom Eternal, which lacks the Pistol, fans perform similar "Shotgun Only" runs, which may or may not include alt-fire weapons such as the sticky bombs.
The style is named for former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson.
