UAC Mars Research Facility was the main facility in Doom 3 (and Doom Resurrection), and also appearing in Doom RPG, and referenced in the Doom 64 (2020 remaster) backstory.
Background[]
Doom 3[]
In Doom 3 the UAC Research Facility encompasses Mars City and several labs.
- You are a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action. Shortly after reporting for duty at the Union Aerospace Corporation's Mars research facility, a massive demonic invasion overwhelms the base, leaving chaos, horror and uncertainty in its wake. As one of only a few survivors, you must use overwhelming firepower and all of your combat skill to battle through the demon hordes, find out what went wrong and prevent the evil from spreading. Only you stand between Hell and Earth.
The base was completely destroyed during the demonic incursion.
Resurrection of Evil[]
NOVEMBER 15 - 2145 The UAC's Mars Research Base suffers a cataclysmic mechanical failure during a classified research experiment, resulting in total destruction of the facility. Only one survivor is located.
Doom Resurrection[]
The game takes place in UAC Research Facility, Mars City. June 2145.
Doom RPG[]
Doom RPG is described as a direct sequel to Doom 3, and covers the Doom Marine’s return to Mars after the events of those games and Doom 1-2. The Doom Marine prepares himself for a return to mars where he has a showdown with the legions of Hell.[1]
- You have been dispatched in response to a distress call from Union Aerospace Corporation's re-search facility on Mars. The base is under attack by an unknown force and your mission is to acquire intelligence and neutralize the threat.
Doom I Enhanced[]
The Doom I Enhanced release retconned the setting of Doom Episode I to Mars (and Deimos) skipping over Phobos altogether. It renamed the facility to match the setting of Doom 3.
- You're a marine--one of Earth's best--recently assigned to the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) research facility on Mars. When an experiment malfunctions and creates a portal to Hell, the base is overrun by blood-thirsty demons. You must shoot your way out to survive.
Doom 64 (2020 remaster)[]
- Years have passed since you stopped Hell’s invasion of Earth. Quarantined for humanity’s safety, the UAC research facilities on Mars were abandoned and forgotten...until now. A signal from a degraded satellite suggests a single entity remains, and it has the power to resurrect the demons. As the only surviving marine who fought Hell’s forces, you are sent on a lone crusade to hunt down the Mother of Demons and stop a renewed demonic invasion.
Hugo Martin has gone on the record to say every numbered game is indeed canon (including Doom 3). He later clarified that everything including Doom Reboot and Doom 3 links back through Doom 64. So the Doom 64 Remaster backstory to UAC Mars Research Facilities appears to be a direct reference to Doom 3 events.
Behind the scenes[]
The events of the Doom 3 and in Doom RPG mirrors the UAC Mars Base invasion mentioned in Doom II manual.
- Back at last. After days of hard fighting in space, you've returned home on well-earned leave. You're one of Earth's crack soldiers, hard-bitten, tough, and heavily-armed. When the alien invasion struck Mars, you were the first on the scene. By killing, killing, and killing, you won. You stopped the invasion, saved Mars base, and became a war hero. What they don't talk about so much is that you were the only survivor. But that's all behind you now. You've quit the military, and are heading home. Your drop pod lands with a crunch. You open 'er up and look out. Damn! The city ahead is on fire. What the devil is going on? You stagger forward, clutching at your sidearm. Packs of refugees are fleeing the flaming metropolis. A band of them shriek in terror. You squint. What's that? Someone is attacking the refugees. You rush up and blast away, killing the troublemaker. It looks like a human but something's wrong. His mouth is filled with half-chewed flesh, and he's all messed up, like a zombie from a bad horror movie. Hell, not again! You can feel it. It's all starting again, just like on Mars. First, people are taken over, turned into cannibal Things. Then the real horror starts, the deformed monstrosities from Outside. But now it's on Earth.
- Situation Analysis:
- After days of fighting in space, you've returned to Earth only to find the situation is no better than it was on Mars. In fact, it's worse. The hell-spawned hordes are everywhere. Billions are dead. The few remaining survivors have planned to travel into space and save what's left of the human race. Unfortunately, the Earth's only transport has been taken over by flesh-eating mutants. You have to go back in action. Otherwise, humanity is history.[2]
