The Torch of Kings is a structure built on Argent D'Nur, used for pilgrimages to The World Spear. It appears in Doom Eternal's second DLC, The Ancient Gods - Part Two.
Description[]
The Torch of Kings is a large stone sculpture of an ornate brazier, standing about twenty feet tall (based on the height of the Doom Slayer when he approaches it). It stands within a small, shallow pool built on a simple stone dais, with a smaller stone brazier set in front of it. The latter has a metallic torch in its bowl, which automatically ignites with a blue-white flame when held for a few seconds; holding this flame to the smaller brazier activates the Torch of Kings, causing it to send a massive beam of energy into the sky. This attracts a Wintherin mount to the Torch, allowing it to carry the one who activated it to the Nether Lake in order to continue their pilgrimage.
The entire process presumably runs on Sentinel Energy, but it is unclear if it operates via advanced technology or outright mystical properties.
The Torch of Kings is flanked by a pair of Night Sentinels, each carrying a large axe with a blue-white energy blade. Their response to the Doom Slayer's approach is to salute him and stand aside, making it ambiguous as to whether they are survivors of the ill-fated Sentinel rebellion or simply honor-bound to welcome any traveler who wishes to activate the Torch (similar to the Seraphim within the Luminarium).
History[]
The Torch of Kings' origin is unknown, but it was presumably built when Argenta civilization began worshipping the Wraiths, as its purpose appears to be facilitating pilgrimages to the World Spear. According to The Father, use of the Torch was forbidden by the Hell Priests once they took full control of Argent D'Nur.
When the Doom Slayer sought passage to the World Spear in order to pursue the Dark Lord to Immora through the Gate of Divum, he lit the Torch of Kings for the first time since the fall of Argent D'Nur. The resulting pillar of energy was visible across the planet; The Father told the Slayer that any remaining loyalists among the Night Sentinels would see it and understand his purpose. The pillar also attracted a Wintherin to carry the Slayer closer to the World Spear.
