The Super Shotgun returns in Doom Eternal, being the 5th primary weapon obtained in the campaign.

The Super Shotgun functions mostly the same as its counterpart in DOOM. However, it has an additional feature in the form of the Meat Hook. This functions as a grappling hook, allowing the Doom Slayer to grapple onto enemies and drag himself towards them for a devastating close-range blast.[1] Unlike other weapons, the Super Shotgun lacks additional mods, and the only one it has is permanently attached. However, you can get the mastery mod for the meat hook on it which sets the enemy you grappled on fire, similar to the flame belch.

Combat Characteristics[]

The Super Shotgun deals heaps of damage up close, gibbing those weak fodder demons in one hit. Its wide spread brings down multiple fodder demons with a single shot. Its massive stopping power can cause most heavy demons to stumble. The gun retains its usefulness at medium ranges. This makes it a useful weapon for clearing out groups of fodder demons, or taking down particularly tanky heavy demons.

Despite this, the Super Shotgun is useless at long ranges, and it uses up lots of ammo, since it requires two shells per shot, meaning that it has only 12 uses at maximum, and 8 uses at minimum. Effective use also requires more fore-thought than in previous entries, as almost every demon has a quick but deadly melee attack.

The meat hook is a great tool for closing the distance between enemies. It can also be used for some parts of traversing the environment. It should be noted that enemies can still move around while the meat hook is embedded in them. The meat hooks chain goes through walls, but the player does not, and the meat hook will automatically detach if you collide with a wall while moving towards you target. Before firing the meat hook, you should make sure you have an unobstructed path to your target, and that there is no cover nearby for your target to move behind. Replacing the Double Trouble mastery from the previous game is Flaming Hook. With it, the Meat Hook will ignite grappled enemies, yielding Armor Shards from a subsequent blast. While this does make it useful as an easy armor source, it does not make it replace the Flame Belch, as it can only ignite one demon for a very brief moment.
