Sawyer (aka Chainsaw Zombie) is a Zombie type appearing in Doom 3.[1] It is a muscular Zombie that appears bare-chest, wearing only a maintenance-style pants with yellow kneepads and shin guards, armed with its signature Chainsaw.

Combat Characteristics[]

The Sawyer Zombie will rush towards the player in order to mow them down with its Chainsaw.

The Sawyer Zombie also possesses high durability, having the most health of any zombie in the game, and it does not suffer from slow movement, as they can sprint slightly quicker than the basic Zombies. Despite this, they will tend to remain stationary while attacking, in which case, if the player moves away from its line of attack, it will attempt to close in on the player again.

Tactical Analysis[]

Arguably, the Sawyer Zombie is the most powerful type of Zombie the player will come across, as they possess the highest health and can even move a lot quicker than most other Zombies encountered in the game.

Fortunately, Sawyer Zombies are a rare occurrence (only appearing in two levels) and they are usually positioned within a reasonable distance to alert the player of their presence.

The best way to take down a Sawyer Zombie is from range with heavy weapons. While most Zombies can easily be dispatched with the Machine Gun, the Sawyer Zombie's high health pool allows them to withstand more than one clip, effectively making this weapon ill-suited against these types of Zombies. Therefore, players must rely on either the Chain Gun or the Plasma Gun to take these Zombies down very quickly before it can close in on the player.

The Shotgun is pretty effective to take these Zombies down from close range, as 2-3 shots from point blank range will instantly kill it. However, if necessary, avoid close combat at all costs. While a single hit from its Chainsaw only does miniscule damage, it builds up very quickly if the attacks connect. Combined with the Sawyer Zombie's high health, close combat overall will make the player feel more vulnerable.

Trivia[]

  • In Delta Labs Sector 4, the first Sawyer Zombie the player will come across is seen wearing a party hat. This could most likely be a nod to an announcement terminal the player finds in Delta Labs Sector 1, where a party was planned to be held in Sector 4.
