According to passages from the Ligra Sultagenta, also known as the Book of Kings, the race of the Night Sentinels called themselves the Argenta. They arose on a world that was impaled by a giant impactor known as the Cosmic Spear, which unleashed the beings of immense power known as the Elemental Wraiths (also called the "Firstborn" by the Argenta), and began the evolution of life on their planet. They were driven by the hostile environment and the power of Wraithcall to take up arms and in time created a highly advanced warrior culture, defeating giant magical creatures known as the Ancestrals in order to secure their place in the world of Argent D'Nur.

  +
The Sentinels, like other Argenta, accepted the Maykr as their gods after the arrival of the creatures, but continued with their duties towards the Wraiths. They fought on the frontlines of the invasion by the forces of Hell at Taras Nabad, and proved instrumental in keeping the demonic hordes at bay. When the time came to take the fight to the enemy, the Night Sentinels took their campaign to the very shores of Hell itself, even Titans falling before the strength of their Atlan war machines.
They crowned a series of warrior kings, beginning with King Ormero the Father. All kings of the Argenta were required to be warriors and were expected to lead from the battlefield in times of war; those who could not were deemed unfit to rule.

The Night Sentinels were formed by the first king of Sentinel Prime, Ormero the Father. They became the guardians of the Wraiths, and acted as both their holy servants and a bridle for their awesome power. However, due to the power of the Wraiths who could corrupt normal humans into monstrous beings, the Night Sentinels also acted as a control measure to the Wraiths to prevent their power from wreaking havoc.

  +
During this time, the "Outlander," a strange man from a strange world, was allowed to join the Night Sentinels as no outsider ever had before. This was due to his apparent insight into the nature of the invaders, which was initially the subject of suspicion. However, King Novik himself accepted the stranger into the Night Sentinels, and he soon fought alongside them, lending his unmatched tenacity and ferocity to their cause.
The Order of the Deag was founded as a priesthood to tend to the Wraiths, which the people of Argent D'Nur both worshipped and feared. Through immersion in the Wraithcall, the people of Argent D'Nur mastered both magic (actually wraith energy) and technology, and combined them. Together, these made the Night Sentinels, the core of the legions of the Argenta.

  +
As the war against Hell raged on, the Night Sentinels were the only members of Argenta society to reject the "Elixir" which had been created though the study of the invading demons. They were also the first to discover the mechanism of its creation when they encountered mighty towers being constructed in Hell by Argenta slave labor, and uncounted innocents put to torture to be harvested for Argent Energy.
The Khan Maykr saw great promise in the flourishing Argenta, and made herself known to Sentinel Prime. She and the Makyrs would aid them in their war against Hell and grant them the gift of Argent Energy to fuel their armies.

  +
Their attempts to report this horrific discovery fell on deaf ears, and even some of their own ranks refused to accept it was their place to question the actions of the Khan Maykr. This sowed the seeds of a civil war among the Argenta, with those loyal to the Khan Maykr denouncing the Sentinels and the King, even discarding their oath to the Wraiths in the process. When these traitor Sentinels were cut down in battle, they were resurrected in the form of Marauders.
A great time later, during one of the many invasions of Hell, the Night Sentinels discovered Makyr factories in Hell being built by Sentinel slave labour. They found that Argent Energy was actually made from the souls of those slain by the Demons of Hell, and that the Khan Makyr had made a deal with the Dark Lord of Hell to gift them the factories to refining it and access to all the worlds under Makyr guidance, in exchange for supplying Urdak with a majority of Argent Energy.

  +
Those loyal to the Wraiths drew up a twofold plan: the Night Sentinels would enter Hell in force and cast down the Soul Spires, while others would wake the sleeping Wraiths to inspire the people of Argent D'Nur with their Wraithcall. In both parts they were betrayed.
When the Night Sentinels returned to Argent D'Nur and spoke of their findings, a divide was split between the people. While one side was horrified by the discovery, a majority of the populace, having benefited from Argent Energy and being grateful to the Khan Makyr who promised the faithful eternal life in Urdak, to no issue with the revelation.

  +
In the former case, the priests of the Order Deag had secretly sided with the Maykr while feigning loyalty to the Night Sentinels. When they opened a portal for the Sentinels to invade Hell, rather than appearing as a unified force they were scattered, embattled from all sides by the legions of Hell with their way back barred even if they could reach it. All who took part in the ill-fated expedition perished save for one, the man they once called Outlander, who the demons would come to know as the Doom Slayer.
Thus the Night Sentinels, comprised of the free people of Argenta and the Slayer himself, went to war against their own people, returning to the way of the Wraiths even if it diminished their armament without Argent Energy. Civil War rose between them and the Ascended Empire, those who believed in Makyrs and comprised of the faithful and misled, the Marauders and those who wielded the power of Hell.

  +
The second betrayal was if anything greater still: a Night Sentinel Commander, Valen, was informed that his deceased son faced eternal torment in Hell, with Deag Grav promising an end to the young man's imprisonment and his rebirth if Valen would assist the priests. Haunted by his son's torture, he eventually gave in, allowing the High Priests of the Order Deag access to the slumbering Wraiths. The mighty beings were dragged down to Hell to form The Well, and as his "reward" Valen's son was indeed reborn. However, this was merely one final act of cruelty: the boy's heart used as the core of the Titan known as the Icon of Sin. For this, Valen's name was cursed and he was only known by the epithet "the Betrayer."
The Night Sentinels with the aid of the Slayer proved to be much too powerful to defeat, so the Khan Maykr recruited the help of the Dark One and his legions of Hell to the cause of the Makyrs, with the help of the Order of the Deag who pretended to aid the Night Sentinels and their King while being secretly loyal to the Khan.

  +
With the Sentinels all but destroyed and the Wraiths imprisoned, Argent D'Nur fell to Hell's forces with large sections of the planet outright dragged into the land of the demons. Those sections that remained fell into ruin: the spirit of King Novik haunting a throne room in Exultia, while a small cadre of Sentinels remained in Sentinel Prime overseeing the Arena there, now host to the cruel amusements of Deag Grav rather than honorable combat.

The Night Sentinels were imbued with Wraith energy and proved fierce opponents to Hell's legions and, according to the Ungmar Codex, almost triumphed over Hell but were betrayed by a member of their order and their High Priests. The Betrayer struck a bargain with the priest, Deag Grav, for the return of his son who had fallen in battle, and he led the priest and his cabal to the source of the Night Sentinels' power, the Elemental Wraiths. Daeg Grav cursed the Wraiths while they slept, and the Hell priests stole their energy for their own devices. Argent D'Nur was defeated, their realm absorbed by Hell, along with the Argent Energy that led to the creation of The Well, and the Betrayer's son was resurrected as the Icon of Sin.

The Argenta are visually indistinguishable from humans, though it is not clear if this means there is a connection between the two races or in which direction. The skin, hair, and eye colours of the sentinels seem to also match those variations seen in Earthborn people as well. It is unknown if their physical abilities differ in any way from those of humans.

Night Sentinel equipment is a fusion of high technology and deeply held tradition, with swords and shields supplemented by spears with energized blades and a powerful long-range firearm known as the Ballista, a match for the performance of a top-of-the-line UAC Gauss Cannon. They were a spacefaring force with access to large capital ships built using Maykr space-folding technology, allowing them to move vast distances without the need for conventional engines.

Their Atlan war machines were bipedal weapons resembling their traditional armor, and armed with a scaled-up version of their standard energy lance, as well as a shoulder-mounted beam cannon and the ability to shoot powerful blasts of energy from their palms. The Night Sentinels adopt warrior culture and deems only the strongest warrior can rule Sentinel Prime. == Faction ==

There are two factions within the Night Sentinels

* Loyalists: Night Sentinels who oppose Hell's Legion and the forces of the Khan Maykr, they are now extinct (expect for the Doom Slayer).
