This covers details about Enhanced versions of Doom I and Doom II (Doom I Enhanced and Doom II Enhanced) and the Doom 64 enhanced remaster.
Background[]
There is no specific dates related to when the game takes place in the game. It's not known if it goes with the 21st century idea seen in the classic novels or SNES doom release. The reference shared with Doom 3 to the UAC Mars Research Facilities in both Doom I Enhanced and Doom 64 Remaster might place it in 2145 time frame.
- You are a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action. Shortly after reporting for duty at the Union Aerospace Corporation's Mars research facility, a massive demonic invasion overwhelms the base, leaving chaos, horror and uncertainty in its wake. As one of only a few survivors, you must use overwhelming firepower and all of your combat skill to battle through the demon hordes, find out what went wrong and prevent the evil from spreading. Only you stand between Hell and Earth.
Hugo Martin has gone on the record to say every numbered game is indeed canon (including Doom 3). He later clarified that everything including Doom Reboot and Doom 3 links back through Doom 64.[1] The Doom 64 Remaster backstory to Mars invasion of UAC Mars Research Facilities appears to be a direct reference to Doom 3/Doom I Enhanced events set before Doom 64. Doom I Enhanced also appears to reworked Doom 1 as a tie-in to Doom 3 location of UAC Mars Research Facilities.
The main notable detail about this timeline is that it retcons the events of Doom 1 as to be set at the UAC Mars Research Facilities rather than Phobos much like in Doom 3. Thus making the story take place on Mars in episode 1, Deimos in Episode II and Hell in Episode 3.
This seems that the Doom 64 (2020 remaster) may have tied into this retcon (or at least Doom 3 backstory in general).
Final Doom and No Rest for the Living are included simply as official "Add-ons" in both games released in this version. The latter is released with almost no story or context in its summary. Though its original release and ending suggests it takes place roughly around end of Doom II.
Timeline[]
- Doom I Enhanced
- You're a marine--one of Earth's best--recently assigned to the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) research facility on Mars. When an experiment malfunctions and creates a portal to Hell, the base is overrun by blood-thirsty demons. You must shoot your way out to survive.
- Doom II Enhanced
- Hell has invaded Earth, and to save it, you must battle mightier demons with even more powerful weapons.
- TNT Evilution (Add-on)
- Taking place after DOOM II: Hell On Earth, TNT: Evilution is set on the moons of Jupiter. With new leadership, and under strict government control, the UAC hoped the distance would keep them safe, but unfortunately a ship from Hell, disguised as an Earth supply ship, would catch the base off guard. As the lone survivor, you, the marine commander, must single-handedly tầke the base back for humanity.
- The Plutonia Experiment (Add-on)
- The UAC, trying to prevent any further invasions from Hell, begin work on new Quantum Accelerator technology in order to permanently close gates as soon as they appear. While initial experiments were successful, immediately cutting off Hell invasion forces, a coordinated invasion causes seven gates to open at once. The Quantum Accelerator is able to cut off six of them, but one still remains. With Hell in control of the Quantum Accelerator, and Earth's forces decimated, you must go deep into the base and regain control before it is too late.
- Doom 64 Enhanced (2020 remaster)
- DOOM 64 is an action first-person shooter and a direct sequel to the events of DOOM II. Years have passed since you stopped Hell's invasion of Earth. Quarantined for humanity’s safety, the UAC research facilities on Mars were abandoned and forgotten...until now. A signal from a degraded satellite suggests a single entity remains, and it has the power to resurrect the demons. As the only surviving marine who fought Hell’s forces, you are sent on a lone crusade to hunt down the Mother of Demons and stop a renewed demonic invasion. Fight against demons in your crusade to hunt down the Mother of Demons and stop Hell's invasion.

Here’s where things get purely theoretical (but oh-so-fun): let’s assume that the countless eons the DOOM Slayer waged war against Hell went for, well, as long as this particular universe can count. Our universe is widely considered to be about 13.8 billion years old, which we’ll say is 13.8 eons. "
