Dystopia 3: Re-Birth of Anarchy is an 11 level WAD supporting single player, cooperative, and deathmatch play. Created by well-known mappers Anthony "Adelusion" Czerwonka and Iikka "Fingers" Keränen and released in 1996, it was one of the first WADs to exploit illusory editing tricks discovered in the Doom engine, such as deep water and the famous fake double 3D bridges (see screenshot).
While its gameplay was true to Doom II's style, the project's level of detail was revolutionary for its time, with levels containing custom textures, crashed spaceships, and elaborate architecture in varied environments, subtly referring to a self-contained story. These elements have led many to claim it is one of the best Doom II WADs ever created, earning a spot on Doomworld's Top 100 Wads of All Time .
Adelusion and Fingers continued to work together on Doom projects, including Requiem, STRAIN, GothicDM, and SlaughterDM. Their work was heavily influential on the community, and raised the standards of judgement for WAD releases.
- This is one of my favorite WADs of all time. In addition to the innovative settings and solid engineering, I particularly like the flow of the levels, which in some places definitely is on par with the best id Software maps. Dystopia 3 is also great for speedrunning; I once started a TAS run, though I gave up on MAP02. MAP04 actually provided bits of the inspiration for Vrack (I ripped the music from there). -- Fredrik
- The first level of this WAD can be used to show another engine limitation on Doom II that can be abused for speedrunning. Thanks to it, I managed to finish the first map in 29 seconds. -- CarlosHoyos
