Dwango5 is a compilation of WADs created for deathmatch play on DWANGO servers. Players submitted WADS to a Dallas-based BBS (The Wall DiSc) operated by Nileppez, which were then reviewed by a team consisting of veteran players such as Core, Natas, Aikman and other players from the Dallas DWANGO server who would rate submitted levels based repeated play in four-player matches. The original (1-6) DWANGO wads were planned to often have a MAP01 remake opening the collection with a mixture of small to large maps intended to appeal to varying styles of game play. Less-experienced players sometimes preferred larger maps which allowed more time to survive as they sought out opponents, whereas the advanced players preferred smaller arena-styled designs for maximum conflict.
Music for the Dwango collections were also heavily planned out, with most of the songs having a story connected to the level they were apart of. For example, one D5M13 featured Black Hole Sun by Seattle band Soundgarden, which was a tribute to the Seattle-based Moderator Spriggan who had created the level and assisted Aikman during the 1995 event "Judgment Day", also known as Deathmatch '95, held at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington - an event which launched the e-sports era.

- D5M1 was derived by Aikman from SS-MAP1.WAD by Rockt (Brett MacLean) and Asmo (RJ Pooch), regular players on the DWANGO San Jose, California servers.
