Background[]

He was trained by Drill Sergeant, Sergeant Workman and his C.O Sergeant Swann.[1]

Following the events of Doom, having returned to Earth from Hell, he is left staring at a flaming city, evidence that the demon aggressors have arrived ahead of him.

It turns out that the monstrous invaders are all over the place.

There are demons from Tokyo to Timbuktu, from Stockholm to Scranton. Many people are dead. Some people have been transformed into flesh-eating zombies, but some have actually survived. The remaining leaders of humankind have evolved a plan to save the human race. In orbit, they have built dozens of enormous ships to carry all the remaining people into space, away from their ruined world.

However, the only spaceport with sufficient capacity for these ships to land has been taken over by the demons. A small band of tough fighters is sent into the port to kill the demons and permit the ships to land and take on passengers. If he lost, all mankind was doomed.

Eventually, he managed to kill the demons guarding the spaceport, and find the master switch to turn off the flame barrier that prevented the ships from landing. He pulled the switch, and the ships land. People filed onto them as fast as possible, and they took off.

Unfortunately, he was trapped in the room with the switch, and was unable to leave with the rest of humanity.

Now, the Marine is the last human left on Earth. Everyone else is a zombie, dead, or in orbit. The High Command radios down to him and says that their sensors have determined that all the demons' power comes from a single spot. If he could find that spot and somehow close it down, they would lose much of their strength, and humanity could land back on the planet and begin to reclaim Earth from the demon horde. He must fight his way through the suburbs and slums of a ruined city, making his way to its very heart, where the monsters have raised a mighty citadel of evil.

He broke into their stronghold and found the source of power. It is, of course, a portal direct to Hell. To close off the gate, he must go through the portal into Hell, and close it from the other side. Without hesitating, he plunged through. Now, in Hell, he had to fight his way through the diabolic landscape to the center of Hell, where he found the master source of all power and destroyed it, thus closing the gate to Earth and trapping the demons in their nether dimension.

He was flung back out of Hell to Earth. Humankind is saved and the demons are thwarted. Now he can have a donut.

Behind the scenes[]

Note: even some parts of Doom II Strategy guide ignore the manual story, and suggest its the same character from the original game, and 'following-up' from where Doom left off;

At the end of Doom, Our Hero, having returned to Earth, is left staring at a flaming city, evidence that the demon aggressors have arrived ahead of him.

The rest of the backstory more or less follows that of the manual, but an overview of the game's entire story. It's worth noting that it appears that the spaceport, and the marine base that "Our Hero" is trained in before he is deployed to the space port appears to be set in Hawaii. As Drill Sergeant ends his briefing with 'aloha', and Workman mentions taking an R&R at the beach. In Doom II Hell on Earth novel, Hawaii was the site of the military base, and last location of resistance in the story. Hawaii is also where Doom guy sent his commander back to in a full-body cast in the manual's story (though when Flynn Taggert did it, his Lieutenant was sent to Mars with him).

Also worth nothing that he is a 'Corporal' (like Flynn Taggart) and his commanders are Sergeants.
