In versions of Doom prior to 1.2, armor percentage was not limited to 200. Since the armor count in the status bar has only three digits, the display can wrap around to 0 percent if enough armor bonuses are picked up to reach the thousands column.

Although there is no armor limit in these versions, a map's lump size in a PWAD has a static limit. In other words, a map can contain only so many things, and therefore only so many armor pickups.
